[Chrome] Google Search is Slow & Not Loading When Typing in Address Bar

This is ironic, googling stuff by typing in the address bar using Google’s Chrome browser can sometimes be really slow. In fact, when it happened, it takes forever to load. Nothing can be helped even if you copy the URL and paste it to load again. I am getting frustrated with this problem that happened since few months ago.

Solution?

My temporary solution is: every time it happens, I switch the default search engine to Yahoo in the Chrome Settings > Search.

Type “Zerg Rush” in Google Search, then Enjoy the Game

It seems that Google has released another Easter egg. This time, it is an interactive game.

To play it live, type “Zerg Rush” in Google Search or click on this link to jump to the page directly.

What do you need to do

1. You will see a lot of alphabets “O” on the screen, they are the bad guys.
2. Your mission is to protect your search results page, as the “O” will kill/eat the page elements.
3. Click on the “O” repeatedly to “kill” them. You need a few clicks to kill each of them.
4. Enjoy the game :)

Celebrating Christmas with Google – “Let It Snow”

This year Google is celebrating christmas with the world. Try searching for “Let It Snow” at google.com and you will see snowflakes start falling from top of the page. Few seconds later, your page will be covered by a layer of snow where you can draw anything you want on the screen. Clicking the blue “Defrost” button will bring the page back to normal, except that snowflakes still continue to fall.

How to Fix Google Chrome Slow Loading Problem

I thought what is wrong recently because more than 50% of websites I visited are loading very slow, in fact sometimes they are not being loaded at all. Today, I finally realized that the problem is with Google Chrome browser because when I tried surfing using Firefox, they can be loaded in seconds. Of course, I am a Google lover so I wouldn’t switch my default browser just because of this. Then, I started to play around with Chrome’s preferences until I finally found a fix.

The main cause : DNS Pre-Fetching Feature

For old version of Chrome, the setting is located at Preferences > Under The Hood.

For newer version of Chrome, the setting is located at Settings > Show Advanced Settings > Privacy

Now, look for a checkbox called “Use DNS pre-fetching to improve page load performance” or “Predict network actions to improve page load performance“. Or similar.

Everyone including me would have ticked this checkbox because it seems to bring only benefits and it sounds promising. However, it is not the case here, while I still cannot explain why this is happening, just untick the checkbox to bring your Chrome back to its speedy glory.

In my Google Chrome for Mac, the settings is actually called “Predict network actions to improve page load performance“. Therefore, just untick any similar checkbox.
